Want to take things a little further? Our exclusive Pass Plus Advance course covers a wide range of other driving skills, such as driving in central London, understanding how to handle your car in skids or aquaplaning situations, focusing on tricky manoeuvres and more. It's the easy way to increase your knowledge on the roads, particularly if you are a new driver, starting a driving job, or having your licence reinstated.
Start saving fuel before you even set off - simply check your tyre pressures! Inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure for a full load (the figures can be found on the fuel tank flap or around the driver's door). This will decrease your rolling resistance, and therefore your fuel consumption too.
Every kilo of luggage costs you fuel. To be precise: a weight of 100 kg can increase fuel consumption by up to 0.3/100 km, so inspect the contents of your luggage compartment on a regular basis. You don't have to cart around a picnic basket or your golf clubs on every journey.
A good aerodynamic shape is the key to low fuel consumption, particularly at high speed. Increasing aerodynamic drag by 33% at 160 km/h will increase fuel consumption by up to 2 l/100 km! Therefore, only use ski carriers etc. when you need them.
The sooner the engine is well-lubricated, the sooner it will produce fewer emissions. This is especially important when starting from cold and on short journeys. Low-viscosity oils are unbeatable in this respect, they can cut fuel consumption by up to 5%.
Short journeys can cause damage to your vehicle, as the oil doesn't have time to warm up properly, this can also cause wear and tear on the engine itself. Short trips can also lead to battery issues as this drains the power quicker as it doesn't have time to recharge between uses.
Convenience consumers, such as the air-conditioning system and heated seats, make driving more comfortable but unfortunately - when used excessively - more expensive, too. During the journey, continuously check which convenience consumers you are using - and which items you actually need.
Using the overrun fuel cut off (taking your foot off the accelerator pedal to coast with a gear still engaged) means you won't use a single drop of fuel. You will also significantly decrease fuel consumption by disengaging the clutch. One of the best times to apply this clever method is when approaching a red traffic light.
Follow the gear-change recommendation carefully. Feel free to skip a gear when changing up. Driving at 30 mph in fifth gear is not a problem for many vehicles, as long as your car runs smoothly and acoustic comfort is maintained the engine speed is not too low.
If you drive calmly and smoothly, apply the brake less and cruise along with the traffic, you will consume much less fuel and your journey will be safer and more relaxed.

“JCM, led by Jade have been great! Jade is always friendly and supportive and at no point has he made me feel silly or uncomfortable. Every lesson feels like you’re out with a friend who just so happens to be teaching you to drive. I passed on my second attempt at the test but the failure first time round was honestly my mistake. If you’re looking for an instructor who is calm, friendly and supportive, I’d highly recommend JCM!”
